A true caudal fin or not? New insights in the evolution of the gadiform caudal fin

چکیده
Abstract The distinctive caudal-fin skeleton of gadiforms has puzzled scientists for a long time, because its many differences in comparison to other teleosts. Contradicting hypotheses interpreted this structure as (i) highly derived teleostean caudal fin, (ii) new formation with parts from the caudal, dorsal and anal fins, so called pseudocaudal, or (iii) complete evolutionary novelty, neocaudal. To shed light on issue, ontogeny Lota lota was studied detail. It differs development non-gadiform taxa, e.g. by absence distinct early notochord flexion. However, there are also similarities teleosts, fin develops before fins. Furthermore, morphology adult fins all major gadiform families were reviewed. Our results, combination latest molecular phylogenies, allowed us discuss evolution resolve origin debated character complex. Although their shows several apomorphies, is homologous without principal inclusion dorsal- anal-fin elements.

The Medaka zic1/zic4 Mutant Provides Molecular Insights into Teleost Caudal Fin Evolution
Teleosts have an asymmetrical caudal fin skeleton formed by the upward bending of the caudal-most portion of the body axis, the ural region. This homocercal type of caudal fin ensures powerful and complex locomotion and is regarded as one of the most important innovations for teleosts during adaptive radiation in an aquatic environment. However, the mechanisms that create asymmetric caudal fin ...
متن کاملThe Primary cell culture from caudal fin tissue of Caspian Kutum (Rutilus frisii kutum)
In the present study, the primary cell lines were derived from caudal fin explants of the Caspian Kutum (Rutilus frisii kutum), using two treatments (tissue culturing without enzyme and after trypsin treatment). For this purpose, pieces of caudal fin tissue (1 millimeter cubic) were isolated from 10 healthy young fish with an average weight of 12±1 g and a mean length of 11±1cm in sterile condi...
متن کاملHydrodynamics of a Flexible Soft-Rayed Caudal Fin
The paper addresses hydrodynamic performance of a slender swimmer furnished with a flexible small-aspect-ratio soft-rayed caudal fin. The recoil of the fin is found by solving the coupled hydro-elastic problem, in which the structure of the fin is modeled by a cantilever of variable cross section and the hydrodynamic forces acting on it are modeled using the elongated body theory. It is shown t...
متن کاملThe Regenerative Capacity of the Zebrafish Caudal Fin Is Not Affected by Repeated Amputations
BACKGROUND The zebrafish has the capacity to regenerate many tissues and organs. The caudal fin is one of the most convenient tissues to approach experimentally due to its accessibility, simple structure and fast regeneration. In this work we investigate how the regenerative capacity is affected by recurrent fin amputations and by experimental manipulations that block regeneration. METHODOLOG...
متن کامل19-P025 Bone dynamics during adult zebrafish caudal fin regeneration
Planaria possess a population of pluripotent adult stem cells called neoblasts, capable of differentiating into all cell types required to regenerate entire animals from almost any fragment. The regeneration of different fragments is catalogued in a body of classical experiments by many eminent scientists. Here, we endeavour to explore these classical observations and insights and combine them ...
